Dry Cleaning or Washing at Home? How to Choose the Right Approach

Dry Cleaning or Washing at Home? How to Choose the Right Approach

Not every garment can simply go into the washing machine. Some fabrics and designs actually benefit from a professional steam treatment, while other clothes wash perfectly well at home. Knowing the difference saves you money and prevents disappointment.

When is dry cleaning the better choice?

  • Suits and blazers: the lining and internal canvas can lose their shape in a washing machine. Dry cleaning preserves the fit.
  • Silk and delicate fabrics: silk can discolour, shrink, or lose its sheen in a regular wash.
  • Wool coats and sweaters: wool can felt and shrink from water and movement in the drum.
  • Evening dresses and beaded or sequined garments: decorative elements often get damaged in a washing machine.
  • Curtains: because of their size and fabric type, curtains are hard to wash and dry at home without creasing.

When can you just wash it yourself?

Cotton t-shirts, underwear, sportswear, and most everyday clothing wash perfectly fine in the machine, provided you choose the right programme and temperature. Always check the care label — it tells you exactly what treatment a garment can handle.

Let the label guide you

Symbols such as a circle (dry clean), a crossed-out bucket (do not wash), or a crossed-out triangle (do not bleach) tell you exactly what is and isn't allowed. When in doubt, it's wiser to bring the garment to a dry cleaner than to risk it.
